Weekend loans are small loans you can apply for on a Saturday, Sunday or public holiday. Lenders that assess applications every day can pay out the same day by instant bank transfer, but if your bank can't receive instant payments, the money usually lands on the next business day.
This guide explains when weekend money really arrives and why, what lenders check before they say yes, what a small loan costs, and the free options worth trying first.

What is a weekend loan?
A weekend loan isn't a separate product. It's a small loan, between $500 and $5,000 at MoneyBuddy, that you apply for when the bank branch is closed.
Most weekend borrowing is for amounts of $2,000 or less. Under Australian law those are small amount loans, often called payday loans, and you repay them over 16 days to a year.
So what makes it a weekend loan is timing, not the loan itself. The two questions that matter are how quickly the lender decides, and how quickly the money can move between banks.
Searches like "weekend loans 24/7" and "Saturday loans" usually come down to that second question. The answer has changed in recent years, and plenty of older advice online still gets it wrong.
When does the money land?
It depends on how the lender sends the money and whether your bank can receive it instantly. Australia now has two very different ways of moving money between banks.
The Reserve Bank built the New Payments Platform so money could reach the person receiving it in close to real time, around the clock. Payments sent this way settle on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays as well as weekdays.
Standard bank transfers work the old way. The Reserve Bank's settlement for those payments is closed on weekends and national public holidays, so a standard transfer started on Saturday usually arrives on Monday.
| When you apply | When the money usually arrives |
|---|---|
| Friday evening | That night if you're approved and paid by instant transfer; otherwise the next business day |
| Saturday or Sunday | The same day by instant transfer; Monday by standard transfer |
| Public holiday | The same as a weekend: instant transfers still run |
| A weekday | Usually the same day once you're approved |

At MoneyBuddy, applications are assessed every day of the year. If you're approved and your bank supports instant transfers, the money can be in your account within 60 minutes, and in rare cases it arrives on the next business day.
The instant service most banks use is called Osko, run by Australian Payments Plus, and it sends money in under a minute, weekends included. Our page on loans over a weekend or public holiday explains how payouts work outside banking hours.
Why a weekend payout can still be delayed
Even with instant payments running, a few things can push the money to Monday. Most of them happen before the transfer is ever sent.
- Your bank or account type doesn't accept instant transfers, so the payment goes the standard way.
- Something on the application needs checking, such as a bank statement that won't load or details that don't match.
- You apply late at night and sign the contract the next morning.
- Your bank handles instant transfers a little differently, which can add some time.
For weekend loans Australia wide, the simplest way to avoid a delay is to have your ID and banking login ready and to sign the contract as soon as it arrives. If your banking app shows a fast or instant payment option, your bank can usually receive one too.
How to apply for a loan on a weekend
The steps are the same as on a weekday. Having your details ready is what makes a Saturday or Sunday application quick.
- Check the lender's basic criteria, such as age, residency and a regular income.
- Have your ID and your online banking login ready, because most lenders read your bank statements.
- Fill in the online form with your income, your regular expenses and how much you need.
- Wait for the assessment, which ends with a credit check.
- Read the contract, including the fees, the repayment dates and the cost of a missed repayment.
- Sign electronically, and the lender sends the money to your account.
Ask for the amount the problem actually costs, not the most you might be offered. Our guide to quick and easy loans online covers what makes an online application faster or slower.
What lenders check before they say yes
A weekend application gets the same checks as one made on a Tuesday. As Moneysmart explains, licensed payday lenders must lend responsibly and can't lend if you won't be able to repay or the loan would cause you substantial hardship.
In practice, the lender looks at your income, your regular spending and any other debts, usually through your bank statements. That's why an application can be fast on a Sunday but never skips a step.
A credit check is part of it too. At MoneyBuddy it's the final screening step, done with a credit reporting body, and the enquiry shows on your credit file.
Can you get a weekend loan with bad credit?
It's possible, but no lender can promise it. A low score usually means a closer look at your current income and spending rather than an automatic no.
Lenders look at how you've handled credit before, including late payments and defaults. Moneysmart explains what appears on your credit report and who is allowed to see it.
What a lender weighs most heavily is whether today's income can cover the repayments. A default from three years ago matters less than a budget that already doesn't add up.
Our page on how bad credit loans work explains how MoneyBuddy assesses these applications. Being honest about your expenses on the form helps, because the bank statements will show them anyway.
If you've been turned down before, it's worth knowing why loan applications get declined before you try again. Applying with several lenders on the same weekend rarely improves your chances.
What a weekend loan costs
Borrowing on a Saturday doesn't change the pricing rules. For loans of $2,000 or less, the law caps what a lender can charge.
| Fee | The legal maximum |
|---|---|
| Establishment fee | 20% of the amount borrowed |
| Monthly fee | 4% of the amount borrowed, each month |
| If you default | The most you can be charged is double the amount you borrowed |
Source: Moneysmart (ASIC), payday loans. Loans over $2,000 have different rules.
Those fees add up quickly. Moneysmart's own example shows that paying back a $2,000 payday loan over one year costs about $3,360, which is $1,360 more than you borrowed.

Loans between $2,001 and $5,000 are priced under different rules. Whatever the amount, compare the total you'll repay with the amount you need, and check whether paying early lowers the cost.
What people use weekend loans for
Most weekend borrowing is about one bill that can't wait until Monday. These are the most common reasons people look for weekend cash loans:
- A car repair you need finished before work on Monday.
- A medical, dental or vet bill that has to be paid upfront.
- An urgent repair at home, such as a broken hot water system.
- A bill with a late fee or a disconnection date coming up.
The weekend makes these feel more urgent, because the people you would normally call are closed. That's also when a fast loan can end up costing more than the problem, so the next section is worth a look first.

Free and cheaper options to try first
A loan isn't the only fast option, and some of these cost nothing. They're worth a few minutes before you apply for loans over the weekend.
| Option | How it works |
|---|---|
| Centrelink advance payment | Part of your payment early as a lump sum, paid back from your next 13 payments |
| No Interest Loan | No interest and no fees, through a community provider, if you can show you can repay |
| Payment plan | Ask the business you owe to let you pay in instalments |
| Hardship help | If you already have a loan you can't keep up with, ask that lender's hardship team |
| A small loan | Fast, but the most expensive option on this list |

If you get Centrelink payments, Services Australia lets you get some of your payment early and repay it through slightly smaller payments afterwards. The quickest way to apply is through your Centrelink online account or the Express Plus Centrelink app.
A payment plan costs nothing to ask for, and a free financial counsellor can help you work one out. Asking on Monday can still beat a loan if the bill isn't due until later in the week.
No Interest Loans come through community providers and can cover essentials such as car repairs. The application takes longer than a weekend loan, but you repay only what you borrowed.
There's no credit check for these, but you do need to show that you can afford the repayments. Moneysmart's page on No Interest Loans explains who is eligible and how to find a provider near you.
Before you apply: a quick check
A few honest answers now can save a lot of stress later. Run through these before you hit submit:
- Can you make every repayment after rent, food and bills?
- Is this a one-off cost, or are you short most weeks?
- Have you looked at the total you'll repay, not just each repayment?
- Do you know what a missed repayment would cost?
If you're short most weeks, another loan usually makes the gap bigger. A financial counsellor can look at the whole picture with you, including payment plans with the companies you owe.
If you're already behind on a loan, contacting that lender's hardship team is the first step. For everything else, the National Debt Helpline on 1800 007 007 offers that help for free and in confidence, with phone lines open on weekdays.
Once the weekend is behind you, even a small buffer helps. Our guide to building an emergency fund shows how to start from nothing, so the next car repair doesn't need a loan.

Frequently asked questions
Yes, many online lenders take applications on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. Whether the money arrives that day depends on the lender paying by instant transfer and your bank accepting it.
It can, if the lender sends it by instant transfer through Osko or PayID and your bank supports it. A standard bank transfer waits until the next business day.
Bad credit doesn't rule you out on its own, but no lender can promise approval. Lenders look at your income and expenses as well as your credit file.
Licensed lenders must check that you can afford a loan, and most include a credit check. At MoneyBuddy the credit check is the final step of the assessment.
The National Debt Helpline on 1800 007 007 offers free, confidential financial counselling. If you get Centrelink payments, you may be able to get an advance and repay it from later payments.
